Subaru Manufacturing Plants Subaru began manufacturing vehicles in Japan (and many vehicles are still produced in the brand's Japanese manufacturing plants), but with the expansion to the U.S. came the high cost of transporting vehicles overseas.
Subaru has a long history of offering vehicles that are both highly capable and intelligently designed. While the Japanese carmaker first entered the automotive world in 1954, it wasn't until 1968 that America got a taste of Subaru's innovative engineering.
At that point, Toyota owned just under 9% of FHI, and the two companies began to collaborate on new models. By 2008, Toyota owned more than 16% of Subaru, and today it holds 20%. In 2017, FHI was renamed Subaru Corporation to better reflect its concentration in the automotive sector.
